One of the most common of all testing requirements is the determination of break strength. Break strength is generally the tensile or compressive load required to fracture a sample. To determine the break strength you will need to define what a break is (break detector). Generally, there are two common types of breaks:
A sharp break is a swift significant drop in load.
A percentage break is another form of break and is generally determined by the sample material and its relationship to load degradation from a peak load measurement. For example, a material could have a load drop of 5%, but not represent a break. In this case, a percentage break would need to be applied. In a tensile test, the breaking load is the break strength. Virtually any product or material will have a break strength characteristic. Lloyd Instruments™ materials testing systems may be used to determine a break strength or to make a comparison of a break strength to a specification (pass/fail). Other common results available using a Lloyd Instruments materials testing system for break strength are:
Break strength testing can be carried out on a range of Lloyd Instruments materials testing machines together with NEXYGENPlus data analysis software when more comprehensive testing results are required.
